Kenneth A. McArthur - Marketing Thoughts
Hi Chris,
Owning your own business may be picking up dog poop
Mark Joyner uses two options - sex or picking up dog poop - when he talks about what you really want to be doing.
The hard cold fact is that owning your own business may be "picking up dog poop" for you.
If you don't feel as thrilled by having a business as you do having sex, this may be a sign that you don't want to have your own business.
I can hear you now, "Ken, aren't you being a little extreme here?" Maybe, but here's a little known truth:
Having your own business is an addiction and if you aren't getting a high running one, it's going to destroy you.
Like most addictions, it may destroy you even if you do love it. The only difference is that if you love what you are doing, you will have a great time on your way to destruction.
So, what are some signs you shouldn't have a business? Try some of these on for size and see if they fit you.
- I can't stand change
-
I need a steady paycheck
-
I don't really like people
-
I can't seem to take action
-
I hate to learn new things
-
I hate doing sales
-
I hate keeping records
-
I hate the government
-
I can't pay the grocery bill next week
-
The landlord just kicked me out
-
Nobody likes me
-
Etc., etc.
Don't worry too much if you find a few things in the list that fit you. A couple of them fit me.
I love change and love to learn new things, but I don't like accounting much and the government drives me a little crazy sometimes. I'd be a lot better business person if I loved keeping records and doing sales, but no one is perfect and you don't have to be perfect to be successful.
Thank God for that!
What you do have to realize is that you have to deal with a lot of the things that are on that list if you want to own your own business, so decide now whether this is how you want to spend a ton of time and money.
Do you want to be doing this even when you would rather be doing something else?
Let's imagine that you have me convinced.
-
Making a living on the Internet and running your own business is absolutely perfect for you.
-
Your spouse, best friend, parents, kids, enemies and even your competition think that this is perfect for you
-
People are offering you thousands of dollars to invest in your business.
-
You have fifty-thousand customers waiting in line to sign-up.
-
You will absolutely keel over dead if you can't have your own business
Note to Self: Even if you are a perfect fit, this may not be the perfect time.
I get people contacting me all the time who are at the end of their rope, clawing for threads to hang on for just one more second so that they can take that big swing at starting their own business.
Don't do it.
I can't hear you thinking ...
"Ken, I have to do this! I'm out of options, I just got a divorce, I'm going into rehab tomorrow, and I can't pay my rent. I can't take care of my kids, the car is being repossessed tomorrow, I just lost my job and I don't have any job skills even if someone was stupid enough to give me one!"
Don't do it.
I'm not saying you can't have your dream. You can!
But, now is not the time to start a business.
Don't spend your last dollar on Internet marketing books, recordings, web sites, info products or promises. If you are down to your last dollar, spend it on food for the kids and then get some help.
Go to your religious group, your government, your friends or your enemies and get some help.
Then find a job that will pay you something (anything) right now so that you can get yourself out of this mess. Get your head straightened out, your body well and your mind working again.
Keep your dream.
There's plenty of quality, free information out there, so read everything that's completely free and don't pay one cent for anything.
Heal, learn, dream and grow. Try saving a few pennies, but for your own sake don't start a business until you have your personal and financial life in some kind of decent order.
Your life doesn't have to be perfect. No one has a perfect life.
Face it. You already have a pretty good idea whether this is the time for you. What I am trying to do is to force you to think about it.
You need to think about it; even if this is the last thing you want in the middle of your wonderful dream.
A business of your own will add to your pressures, not magically take them away. If you can't cope now, adding more to your plate won't help.
Be honest. Building a business isn't easy.
More soon!
All the best,
Kenneth A. McArthur
